The Road Home Row Along Show and Tell Day

The Road Home Row Along Show and Tell Day

So today is the last day of the The Home Row Along, and it is show and tell day.

I absolutely loved ALL of the rows, and I plan on making all of them and making a queen sized quilt. The layout is not finalized yet, but I will share that when I get to that point.

Now! I had every intention of presenting a full queen sized quilt top for show and tell day, but life and other events, have put a serious damper on those plans for now. What I do have to show you, has been quilted up and in use as we speak.  I especially had a problem with my hands at the moment, at my young age (42) I have arthritis in my fingers and wrists. My thumbs are most effected, and it is making the cutting out of pieces very painful.  I tried scissors and the rotary cutter, it makes no difference.  If I could just get that cut out, then I can applique the bits with the sewing machine. Because hand appliqueing is out of the question. I will have to save up and get myself one of there “shape cutting machines”.

Without further ado, here is my 3 rows I have managed to sew. The first one I kept separate from the other 2, as I love it so much.

I decided to turn this one into a wall hanging for my room, as my room has a space theme, being a Star Trek fanatic.

This is the Outer Space row.

The pieces is all machine appliqued, which has quilted all of the layers together. The binding is a bright orange, just because I love orange.

Sarah designed this row, and you can read up about it and get the pattern link here …

The bottom row is my own row based on our beach here where I live in Amanzimtoti, South Africa.

The top row is the African Sunset row. Which I just love. I made a couple of mistakes here, that I only saw right at the end when I was nearly finished piecing the row. Completely my own mistake. I also left out the Meerkats, that is supposed to fit in at the end. My hands were killing me by this time.

This is my new table runner or topper for our coffee table, which is in use right now.

The African Sunset row was designed by Janeen from Quilt Art Designs, and you can find her post and pattern link here …

The Road Home To Maine with Cheryl…

road-home-row-alongThis is my first Row Along and it has been so much fun designing what I saw in my head.  I grew up in southern Maine with the ocean on one side of us and a mountain (my husband calls it a hill, lol) on the other side.  I love walking through the woods as much as spending time gazing out across the ocean.  Our lobsters and famous Nubble Lighthouse attracts people from all over. I hope you enjoy this rendition of our state.

stbs-Road-Home-long-banner-1-151x300First I need to say a very big thank you to Amy Warner of Sew Incredibly Crazy and Marian Pena of Seams to be Sew for organizing another fantastic event. There has been a lot of hard work planning and gathering sponsors for this row along. And I can’t thank you enough.

Plus we must not forget any of the bloggers and quilters who has designed a row for this row along, they are all beautiful rows, and I wish I had the time to sew all of the rows.

Now for my row.

When this Row Along came along with the theme “The Road Home” it brought up so many images in my brain, the options to choose from was huge. But in the end I chose the beach. It is my favorite place, the ocean makes me feel calm and I just love the water.

And my home town is in Amanzimtoti in South Africa.

This is my row

Clicking on the photo will take you to my Craftsy store to download this pattern, it will be free forever.

The row is 12 x 40″ excluding the seam allowance and paper pieced.

I know it looks a little scary, but if you follow the sewing order and have a little patience, you could easily make this row.

Here is my progress, sewing this row together.

This is the image of the row after I finished designing the row.

I broke the row down into 4 blocks to make it easier to piece together, the black lines shows where the block was broken down further. The pattern will show you exactly how to sew everything together and in what order.

First I cut out all of the pattern pieces, and used a color pencil to color all the bits using the color chart, that is provided in the pattern.

Now I need to mention, that my favorite sewing tool of all time, is the add an 1/8 ruler, this is perfect for making those seams as small as possible, to lessen the bulk around those seams. I do think, that I would not be able to live without my little ruler.

I also use my rotary cutter a lot, I tend to wait a little to long before replacing the blade on it, and then tend to cut bits of my finger off, well nearly.

My sewing machine is an 80 year old Bernina with straight and zigzag stitches only.  I do all of my quilting on it as well with no trouble at all, and that includes king sized bed quilts. And it happens to weigh a lot, don’t even ask me why I would mention that.
