Star Trek Quilt Top Complete

Star Trek Quilt Top Complete

My fellow Star Trek fans, the quilt top is complete. I just need to find the perfect backing for it and get quilting.

Check it out, isn’t it the best thing you have ever seen?

Star Trek Quilt Top Complete

(really need to work on my quilt photography)

I will post a nice photo once the quilt top is quilted.

Most of the block patterns are mine, but there are some other designers in there as well. You can find them on my Star Trek page here.

Or on Fandom in Stitches

and Some can be found on Sewhooked

Originally I thought it would be a good idea to have both black and brown starry fabric for the background. It doesn’t look to bad, but I think I would have gone with just the black background.

Also these Star Trek patterns were some of the first patterns I designed when I just started designing. And there was no plan of action on anything at all. I just designed willy nilly.

So when it came time to put them all together it became a problem, I had to add fabric to some, and trim off on others to make them all fit together.

Since them I have planned all my quilt tops, to ligically fit together, so that it does not become a problem for other quilters to put together.

I know there has not been any new Star Trek patterns posted recently, but there is a reason for that. I a planning a Star Trek quilt along for 2018. It is themed The Next Generation. Whoohoo, my favorite series. So all the patterns being designed is specifically for the quilt along and cannot be share yet.

If you would like a quilt along based on the other series as well, no worries they are coming as well. But you can help me decide which one will be next.

Please comment below or fill in the the contact form below and let me know what type of Star Trek theme or a completely other theme you would like to see.

Paper Piecing Vintage update

Paper Piecing Vintage update

Hey everyone!

As mentioned in my crafty updates post. I decided that I would only join one quilt along this year, as I have to many of my own projects that needs finishing up, loads of patterns and quilts on the way…

I chose to join in with Jennifer Ofenstein at Sewhooked for her quilt along this year.  And it is called Paper Piecing Vintage.

You can also follow Jennifer in her Facebook group. You have got to see some of the awesome blocks being posted there by other PPV quilters.

These are the blocks I have made so far.

Paper Piecing Vintage update

It was so difficult to choose a color scheme for this quilt, I went through my stash and first was going for a range of cream to browns, and then it was purple.

But in the end I decided on a scrappy pink and white with a touch of green.

And a close up of all the blocks.

I have a couple of blocks left to do to be able to finish the quilt top. Can’t wait for it to be finished.

Crafty Updates

Crafty Updates

I am carving out some time to work on some much needed quilts, that has been promised for awhile now.

Quilt UFO 1 – The Dragon Quilt, this one is for my brother. And I meant to have a dragon quilt done for Christmas, …. last year.

I had every intention of designing the dragons for this quilt, but time was not on my side.

These dragon patterns was designed by Michelle Thompson, a very talented pattern designer. You can see more of her work on her blog Misha29.

Plus the patterns are featured on Fandom in Stitches as well.

This is the first to done, need to finished another 4 dragons,  … I think.

The patterns are all 12 inches. I will be adding wide borders to make it bigger so it fits my brothers body.

Then I started with the Block Of The Month, which the only one I allowed myself for this year.

Paper Piecing Vintage 2017. You can find these patterns at Sewhooked.

Crafty Updates

With the BOM, I decided to go with delicate colors. I love how it looks all vintage.

Quilting Therapy

Quilting Therapy …

Is the name of my new and first pattern for 2017. It is a very easy paper pieced pattern, perfect for beginners.

The idea came to me one day, as I was commenting to someone about not needing a psychologist, as quilting is my therapy.  It is what I do at the end of every day, after a day at work. Basically every spare minute I have.  What about you, do you find quilting therapeutic? Let me know in the comments below. I would love to hear from you.

Quilting Therapy

(Need to work on my quilting photography)

The pattern has the capsule template, plus the layout instructions for a crib, twin and queen sized bed quilts.  Clicking on the picture above will take you to my Craftsy Shop.

I had a bit of fun here, as I included a bunch of “special” fabric. This therapy quilt, as jelly beans candy, umbrellas for rainy weather, some African birds, flower, apples, yarn etc. You know, things that makes us happy.  Plus some random fabric, that could look like things you will find in capsules.

So there you have it.

There is another project I finished this year, but I cannot show you yet, as it is for a blog hop coming up 20 January. The theme is winter and it is hosted by Marian from Seams to be Sew. Link in the picture.

The 3rd pattern is just about finished. I designed an applique Star Wars pattern. I made the square, just have to finished up the pattern and will then share it here for free. Look out for that in the next couple of days.

Princess Leia

And I sewed up another BB8 block, this one is 20″ in size, a paper pieced pattern.

Clicking on the picture will take you to my Craftsy shop for the free download or you can download BB8 at Fandom in Stitches, there is a whole bunch of other Star Wars patterns there as well.

And that’s me for today. I hope everyone had a super awesome start of the year.

2017 Year of the UFO

2017 Year of the UFO

It is sad to say, that the second half of 2016 flew by so fast, I hardly had time to post patterns and tutorials.

From September to this past Wednesday I was super busy running a quilt along which was hosted by Fandom in Stitches. I blogged and posted a LOT on FIS and the Facebook page for Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along, and did not have time for my own site. This will be corrected asap. And should not have happened, but I did learn a lot from this Quilt Along, even though I prepared for it for a year, I was still not prepared. AT ALL!

You can find the link to the archive here.

2017 Year of the UFOHere are some pictures from the Quilt Along

The good thing is, I DID learn a lot from this experience and will be running BOM and QAL here a lot now and I have LOADS of ideas, which I really hope you will love and join in.

I have a couple of patterns just about ready to be released, look out for these coming out in the next couple of weeks.

WOW, I honestly didn’t think I finished so many projects 2016, not bad at all. If I have to say so myself.

Some pictures of finished quilts

So onto my plans for next year.

First, I have seen a lot of other quilters talk about the UFO lists, and let me tell you I was shocked to find out how long my list is. Filled up with half finished quilt alongs and blocks of the months from other quilters.

So I have the restricted myself to only one Quilt Along or BOM for 2017 from another quilter.  More about that later.

The UFO list has been whittled down to 12, as I am determined to finish at least 1 UFO per month.

Here is the 2017 UFO list I WILL finish.

(with the year it was started)

  1. Star Trek Quilt – blocks finished, complete the quilt top – 2016
  2. My Favorite Things (Jennifer Ofenstein – Sewhooked) – finish up the blocks and the quilt top – 2016
  3. X- Files quilt along ((Jennifer Ofenstein – Fandom in Stitches) – finished blocks and quilt top – 2016
  4. Sunbonnet Sue Block of the month (Marian Pena – Seams to be Sew) – finish blocks and quilt top – 2016
  5. Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along – Mine – finish blocks and quilt top – 2016
  6. Large Hexie Quilt – Aunt gave to me 2016 – started 1986
  7. Eagle Quilt – Designed – make quilt top – 2016
  8. Dragons Quilt – designed – make quilt top – 2016
  9. Fantastic Beasts Quilt Along 2 – Started designing – need to finish designing and make blocks and finish the quilt top by September 2017
  10. Sampler FMQ – Finish practicing all the lessons – learning to fmq – 2016
  11. Jersey – OK this is not a quilt. But I got an unfinished jersey from my late aunt, and it just needs its last cuff on the sleeve to be able to use it. – 2015
  12. Paper pieced house mug rug – Done, just needs binding – 2015

Alright my friends, that was just the short list. I would like to get more done than that, and will attempt more from the lists below if I get time, as I am busy with a bunch of new patterns to be released. Some free, some for sale.

The Road Home Row Along Show and Tell Day

The Road Home Row Along Show and Tell Day

So today is the last day of the The Home Row Along, and it is show and tell day.

I absolutely loved ALL of the rows, and I plan on making all of them and making a queen sized quilt. The layout is not finalized yet, but I will share that when I get to that point.

Now! I had every intention of presenting a full queen sized quilt top for show and tell day, but life and other events, have put a serious damper on those plans for now. What I do have to show you, has been quilted up and in use as we speak.  I especially had a problem with my hands at the moment, at my young age (42) I have arthritis in my fingers and wrists. My thumbs are most effected, and it is making the cutting out of pieces very painful.  I tried scissors and the rotary cutter, it makes no difference.  If I could just get that cut out, then I can applique the bits with the sewing machine. Because hand appliqueing is out of the question. I will have to save up and get myself one of there “shape cutting machines”.

Without further ado, here is my 3 rows I have managed to sew. The first one I kept separate from the other 2, as I love it so much.

I decided to turn this one into a wall hanging for my room, as my room has a space theme, being a Star Trek fanatic.

This is the Outer Space row.

The Road Home Row Along Show and Tell Day

The pieces is all machine appliqued, which has quilted all of the layers together. The binding is a bright orange, just because I love orange.

Sarah designed this row, and you can read up about it and get the pattern link here …

hosted by Marian at Seams to be Sew

12011387_744785302334263_7072732987409645872_nThe other 2 rows, is stitched together using quilt as you go. And this is my first time to use the Quilt as you go method, I failed a bit here. As  didn’t follow the instructions in the video properly, lesson learned.

The bottom row is my own row based on our beach here where I live in Amanzimtoti, South Africa.

The top row is the African Sunset row. Which I just love. I made a couple of mistakes here, that I only saw right at the end when I was nearly finished piecing the row. Completely my own mistake. I also left out the Meerkats, that is supposed to fit in at the end. My hands were killing me by this time.

The Road Home Row Along Show and Tell Day

This is my new table runner or topper for our coffee table, which is in use right now.

The African Sunset row was designed by Janeen from Quilt Art Designs, and you can find her post and pattern link here …
