My Happy Place Row Along The Great Outdoors

My Happy Place Row Along The Great Outdoors

Hi everyone,

Today is finally my day to release my pattern for the My Happy Place Row Along. When Marian Pena from Seams To Be Sew announced this years row along, I had to take part. We all have our happy places, some of us even have more than one.

Thanks Marian, for hosting another brilliant Row Along.

I for one, have more than one happy place. It was hard to choose but I finally decided on The Great Outdoors.

I love a good campfire, overlooking the lake (or damn, as we call it here in South Africa) and the fantastic Drakensberg in the distance. I can just imagine myself being there, right now.

I machine stictched the applique pieces to the background.

And at the top, where the sky is, I decided to tie down that section, with some silver thread by hand. Inside all of the stars.

And the back of the quilt.

I added a hanging sleeve to the back, as this quilt has a place on my wall, just need to drill some holes.

The traditional quilters might raise the eyebrows to this, but because I work all day, I really don’t have time to hand sew a binding down. I would never get anything done. So all my bindings are machine stitched.

After trying several different styles if binding, I have decided I like the flanged binding best. It makes it look very neat and tidy. You just sew along the join in the seam and all done. There are many tutorials online on how to make the flanged binding.

You can download the row along pattern here.

We have some wonderful sponsors for this Row Along.

First is Northcott Fabrics has been a sponsor of this event for all three years this Row Along has been held. In the first row along and now in the third, they have provided up to a yard of fabric to the bloggers to use in their rows, this was the first part of their sponsorship this year.

I love the way your your quilt captures the feeling of a campfire at night! The colors and design are awesome! Thanks for sharing this.

  2. Ronelle

As a fellow South African I can just picture the majestic Drakensberg mountains from around a camp fire and braai (BBQ). Thank you for the awesome row you shared, Vanda. I love it.

As a fellow South African I can just imagine looking at the majestic Drakensberg Mountains from a campfire, having a braai (BBQ). Thank you for the awesome row you are sharing with us, Vanda. I love it.

Thank you for an awesome row.
As a fellow South African, I can imagine the majestic Drakensberg in front of me, especially around the camp fire. Thanks

So many pieces and textures to enjoy in your row! I will be looking up a flanged binding tute because I love yours so much!

  6. Laura M

Your flanged binding is so effective (and who cares how you finish the back!) I also love the way you did the sky.

  7. Cute quilt. I love flanged binding. Oops! I clicked the wrong button on Carol’s shop (EQ) and couldn’t get back to correct it. Also, Daydreams of Quilts (EQ) is a closed FB site. I’m not on FB, so, I can’t see this shop/site.

  8. I love your row and the machine stitched binding is just right. When I can, I love to do it by hand, but more often than not now I am doing it by machine. I just did that flange binding on a quilt – reminds me I need to blog about it…. Happy rest of the week!

I love being outdoors as well, and your row perfectly expresses it. Thanks so much for taking part in the Row-Along! I can’t imagine working full time and still trying to find time to quilt and blog about it!!! Congratulations on the great job!! Blessings!!

Thank you for the lovely row. I now have the perfect excuse for the sparkling silver thread I could not resist buying last Tuesday at the sewing machine shop.

I like this! There are places out west in the US that I could see a similar scene, and I love those places. The sparks rising from the fire are a wonderful touch. BTW, I see nothing wrong with machine binding, and I’m as traditional as they come. =) Thanks for the pattern for your beautiful row.

Nice job with your row. I too like the flanged bindings…no hand stitching required! Thanks for taking the time to create and generously share!

Great place to be! Campfire, clear sky, twinkling stars, solitude. What more could you ask for? Thanks for sharing.

I love your row, Vanda! Around a campfire is absolutely one of my happy places. Tying down with silver thread as stars is brilliant!!!!!

My brother takes his kids camping, and I think he would love your row. I’m always looking for things to make for him, and I am thrilled to have found something that will be special for their family. Thank you.

  16. I love your row, and it is fantastic as a wall hanging. I tried out the flanged binding on a quilt that I finished this year; great technique, and so easy to do. Thanks for sharing!

  17. I love how this row turned out Vanda, the campfire seems a perfect fit for me as my hands are freezing cold at the moment. I’ve got my heat on, but it’s just not enough this morning for me… LOL So I want the warmth of a fire to get my hands nice and comfy warm. 🙂

I’m glad you came along again with us this year. I love having you in the row along and hope you’ll be joining us for a 5th year. Hope you had a good trip, and Hugggs!!
