My Happy Place Row Along The Great Outdoors

Hi everyone,

Today is finally my day to release my pattern for the My Happy Place Row Along. When Marian Pena from Seams To Be Sew announced this years row along, I had to take part. We all have our happy places, some of us even have more than one.

Thanks Marian, for hosting another brilliant Row Along.

I for one, have more than one happy place. It was hard to choose but I finally decided on The Great Outdoors.

I love a good campfire, overlooking the lake (or damn, as we call it here in South Africa) and the fantastic Drakensberg in the distance. I can just imagine myself being there, right now.

I machine stictched the applique pieces to the background.

And at the top, where the sky is, I decided to tie down that section, with some silver thread by hand. Inside all of the stars.

And the back of the quilt.

I added a hanging sleeve to the back, as this quilt has a place on my wall, just need to drill some holes.

The traditional quilters might raise the eyebrows to this, but because I work all day, I really don’t have time to hand sew a binding down. I would never get anything done. So all my bindings are machine stitched.

After trying several different styles if binding, I have decided I like the flanged binding best. It makes it look very neat and tidy. You just sew along the join in the seam and all done. There are many tutorials online on how to make the flanged binding.

You can download the row along pattern here.

We have some wonderful sponsors for this Row Along.

First is Northcott Fabrics has been a sponsor of this event for all three years this Row Along has been held. In the first row along and now in the third, they have provided up to a yard of fabric to the bloggers to use in their rows, this was the first part of their sponsorship this year.

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

Standard

Welcome to the 2017 Row Along – Christmas Caroling Blog Hop!

Thank you Marian Pena of Seams to be Sew for all the work that you do to organize and host this hop.  Also, a huge thank you to  Vanda Chittenden for taking the time to post my row on her blog.

This is my second year doing the hop and has been a great experience in doing something a bit different with my Electric Quilt program.  My row this year is Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.  I immediately thought about the verse…

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Had a very shiny nose,

And if you ever saw it,

You would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer

Used to laugh and call him names;

They never let poor Rudolph

Join in any reindeer games.

Hence, Rudolph is up on the hill looking down on the other reindeer playing ball.

My background is pieced with raw edge appliques on top.  I have not done much work with raw edge applique, it was challenging and fun.  I got to try out a lot of different stitches on my machine to embellish the edges.  I then used an assortment of beads, bells, trim and markers to get the effect that I wanted to achieve.  Hope you have fun with this one!

DIRECTIONS/TIPS:

Background – The long triangle for the sky (top) and snow (bottom) are the same as is the  shorter triangle for the 2 sides.  You will need to reverse 3 of the long triangles on one side as well as reverse 2 of the side triangles on one side.  Be careful not to stretch the bias.  The 2 single deer, rabbit and snowman also need to be reversed.  After printing, turn your paper over and trace the shape on the reverse side…write “reverse” on this side so you remember what side you need to use for the fusible.

Make sure you use double sided fusible, don’t remove the paper until you are ready to stick them on your background or if you are *pre-assembling.  Before peeling the paper off the fusible, place it on the back of the fabric and turn it over to ensure the pieces are facing the proper way before actually sticking the fusible on.  This will help you determine which side of the paper to pull off first.  Don’t peel off the 2nd side until you are ready to put the pieces together.

I found it easier to carefully mark ¼” all the way around without stretching the fabric.  You can place a piece of sandpaper under it, before marking, if you are afraid of stretching the fabric.  I then placed the snowman/tree on the right and the large tree on the left first. Place them just to the inside of your ¼” side seam marking in order to get all your pieces to fit.  You don’t want to get them stuck in the seam when you stitch your backing on.

*I found it easier to build the snowman, rabbit and deer on an applique pressing sheet or shiny side of freezer paper before place them on the background.  Check your paper for proper placement.

After all the pieces are on your background, place an applique pressing sheet or the shiny side of the freezer down over the top and gently press with no steam.

I also suggest using a stabilizer on the back of your row while machine appliqueing your pieces on.  This will stop your background fabric from puckering so much.

Stitch down using your favorite applique stitch and have fun embellishing!

(NB! to comment, click on the comment box right underneath the heading of the post or at the very bottom of the post.)

stbs-Road-Home-long-banner-1-151x300First I need to say a very big thank you to Amy Warner of Sew Incredibly Crazy and Marian Pena of Seams to be Sew for organizing another fantastic event. There has been a lot of hard work planning and gathering sponsors for this row along. And I can’t thank you enough.

Plus we must not forget any of the bloggers and quilters who has designed a row for this row along, they are all beautiful rows, and I wish I had the time to sew all of the rows.

Now for my row.

When this Row Along came along with the theme “The Road Home” it brought up so many images in my brain, the options to choose from was huge. But in the end I chose the beach. It is my favorite place, the ocean makes me feel calm and I just love the water.

And my home town is in Amanzimtoti in South Africa.

This is my row

Clicking on the photo will take you to my Craftsy store to download this pattern, it will be free forever.

The row is 12 x 40″ excluding the seam allowance and paper pieced.

I know it looks a little scary, but if you follow the sewing order and have a little patience, you could easily make this row.

Here is my progress, sewing this row together.

This is the image of the row after I finished designing the row.

The Road Home Row Along, Amanzimtoti, South Africa

I broke the row down into 4 blocks to make it easier to piece together, the black lines shows where the block was broken down further. The pattern will show you exactly how to sew everything together and in what order.

First I cut out all of the pattern pieces, and used a color pencil to color all the bits using the color chart, that is provided in the pattern.

Now I need to mention, that my favorite sewing tool of all time, is the add an 1/8 ruler, this is perfect for making those seams as small as possible, to lessen the bulk around those seams. I do think, that I would not be able to live without my little ruler.

I also use my rotary cutter a lot, I tend to wait a little to long before replacing the blade on it, and then tend to cut bits of my finger off, well nearly.

My sewing machine is an 80 year old Bernina with straight and zigzag stitches only.  I do all of my quilting on it as well with no trouble at all, and that includes king sized bed quilts. And it happens to weigh a lot, don’t even ask me why I would mention that.
