Blog updates and changes

Standard

Hi everyone,

After some reflection and contemplation about the past year and where the future is taking me. I have made some decisions about some of my activities.

I am expecting some of your leave me after this blog post, and I am OK with that. We are all different people with different views, and I respect that.

Sewing

Most of you would have started following me, because of Fandom In Stitches and all the Quilt Alongs I designed patterns for. And through the Partners in Design group and my patterns through that group. And a few of you know me through the TTMT vlogging group with Jennifer Ofenstein from Sewhooked. Thank you for your loyal following over the last couple of years.

In terms of patterns and sewing, I have closed down my sewing business, and am in the process of closing all those Facebook pages and groups. Except the ones from Fandom in Stitches, an admin will run those groups. I will not be selling patterns again. Or designing.

This is not the end of my sewing though, as I love sewing and to stop would be like cutting of my right arm. Family and friends will still get sewn gifts from me and a lot of Church sewing is on the cards. And where I have time, I will still share a pattern here and there. Sewing will just not be my main focus. So I will still share some sewing stories here, whenever I can.

All my Fandom patterns, will still be available through Fandom in Stitches, which is hosted by Jennifer Ofenstein. Those won’t disappear. And I have my final sew along with Jennifer from January 2019, which will be my goodbye to the Fandom. All the patterns will be available on the FIS website.

The past year

Most of you will know already, how difficult the past year has been. Starting with the death of my 2 year old niece, that sent me into a spiral down into a dark hole, that I was struggling to get out of. Combined with some repressed memories surfacing, it was not a good start to the year. And I needed some serious counseling.

The Church

Early in the year, I found my way back to the Lord, Jesus Christ, and I discovered a passion for ministry in the Church. It has taken me the whole year, but I have realized that I have a mission to fulfill. One that I have been denying for decades. I have now accepted my calling from God, and will spend time learning and doing what I need to do, to fulfill my mission.

That is why I am changing my focus for this blog slightly, to include my journey into Ministry and Mission and study.

Thank you to everyone, who has been following me. If you are leaving my blog, that is OK! If you are staying, awesome!

I look forward to sharing my story with you into the future.

Happy Sewing!

Putting the quilt together.

My finished quilt for the Fall Into a Quilt Along is here.

(the pictures below is from last years quilt along, but I used all the exact same measurements)

You will need the following;

(8) 1 inch x 12.5 inch strips (back)

(8) 2 inch x 12.5 inch strips (front) (pressed in half)

(3) 1 inch x 36.5 inch strips (back)

(3) 2 inch x 36.5 inch strips (front) (pressed in half)

Your choice of binding.

My layout, has 3 blocks in a row, and 4 rows to make up the final quilt.

Step 1

Take (1) 2 x 12 inch strip and line it up on the front of a block.

Add (1) 1 x 12 inch strip to the back of the block.

Make sure they are line up nicely. You will have the top strip, the quilted block and the bottom strip all lined up. Now, sew a seam a 1/4 inch from the edge.

Step 2

Turn over your block. See the strip?

Press the back strip towards the seam. This will make it easier to sew the next block to it.

Step 3

Take the next block in the row, place it with the backside facing up, and the backside of the first block facing down. So they need to be back to back.

Place the back strip (from the first block) along the edge of the second block.

Make sure that they edges line up nicely.

And sew a 1/4 from the edge.

Step 4

Flip the second block over to also face up. Check how perfectly the edge fit snugly together. This will not create a ridge in the finished quilt, as there is no overlapping.

Press the top strip over to the second block. The top strip cover the seam allowance easily.

You can now, either hand sew this strip down, the same as binding, or you can machine sew a straight line down the edge. To make it look more even, you can repeat the line on both sides of the strip. Plus if you use a matching thread with the back, you will not notice the extra line on the back.

Step 5

Repeat, all the steps above, to finish the rest of the rows. And exactly the same way, to attach all the rows.

The finished quilt. Trimmed and squared.

The binding.

I cut my binding strips at 2 1/2 inch wide and pressed in half. Use any technique you prefer to bind your quilt. I like to machine bind my quilts, as most are for my family and they don’t mind.

Candy stripe binding.

A closeup of the biding and the corners.

Hedgehog Quilt As You Go

Hedgehog Quilt As You Go.

Remember I did not applique stitch the shapes down, as I wanted to stitch them down after I made my quilt sandwich.

Start with making sure your shapes are heat pressed down properly.

Then make a quilt sandwich, making sure that you batting and your backing is slightly bigger than your block.

Baste your sandwich in any method you like.

The back

Then once you picked your design to quilt, draw it onto your block with an erasable pen. I decie

Applique stitch around each shape, either by hand or with your machine.

Look, a hedgehog shape on the back!

Straight line stitch the grass at the bottom.

Then free motion stitch swirly shapes for the wind around the hedgehog.

I added an additional squiggly line in the body of the hedgehog to make it look more spiky.

Happy sewing.

Quilt Qwazy Queens Day Two

Welcome to Quilt Qwazy Queens Blog Hop Day 2, hosted by Marian at Seams to Be Sew. You’ll find the list of other participants at the end of my post who are also offering daily giveaways. Thank you, Marian, for hosting another brilliant hop.

Our theme this year is UFO’s (Unfinished Objects), you know! Those quilt tops you finished and not quilted yet. Or maybe you haven’t even made all the blocks yet for a complete quilt top.

After much debate with myself about how I am going to show my huge amount of UFO’s, I made the decision to show you ONLY 20 of them, and not all 87!

And to make it easier, I left them all in 1 photo and not 20.

In this photo I have the following UFO’s; Fantastic Beasts 1 & 2, I want to believe, Pink Kitty, Pinstripe Crossing, Star Trek quilt, My Favourite Things, Project of Doom, Signature top, Pinwheel table runner, T Shirt quilt, Ipad Quilt, Place mats, Candlewicking quilt, Fall panel, Camping quilt, Little pink house, Stacked Windows, and Paper Piecing Vintage.

These are the ones, that I had every intention of finishing off this year… what a laugh. This year, is turning out to be just as busy as last year.  But I will persevere.

Please go and visit the other ladies who is posting today, to see what they have been busy with.

I Wish You A Merry Quilt Along Block Twelve Plus Prizes

Don’t forget, besides the prizes you can win each week, there is also a big prize for everyone who posts a finished quilt at the end.

Here are some of the sponsors for the BIG prize that you can win at the end of the quilt along.

I Wish You A Merry Quilt Along Block Twelve Plus Prizes

And now we have the FINAL block, block 12.

The “Christmas Lights” block was designed by Laura Piland at Slice of Pi Quilts. You can find the tutorial and pattern on her blog here.

Here is my finished Christmas Lights block.

I will confess here, that it was my first time making and using bias tape in quilting. It scared me silly.

But here is the big lesson my fellow quilters, do not prevent yourself from trying something new or different, because it looks to scary or difficult.

This block was a lot easier than I thought it would be, because of the bias tape. I did not for one second believe that the fabric would form a curved shape.

Laura’s instructions in the pattern and on her blog, is super easy to follow and explains everything very well.

So pop on over to her blog and check it out.

Quilting the block

Below is a couple of close up photos of the quilting on this block.

First, I glued down the bias tape with some thermaweb. I managed to selvage some from an elderly lady who was throwing her sewing things away. Below is brands typically found in South Africa, but I a pretty sure that anywhere else had better quality products available. These were for hemming clothes and works perfectly for this project. I used the 23mm (+- 1 inch strip, rolled in 8 yard lengths)

See now I don’t have to pin the tape.

I started by stitching down all the bias tape, as I was a bit worried it would move around to much. Even with it being glued down.

Using a machine applique stitch, in this case a blanket stitch.

And lastly I stitched around each of the globes.

The background called for some meandering to fill up the spaces.

The Hosts for the Quilt Along

Please go and have a look at all the hosts posts today. Each of the host will be making all the blocks throughout the Quilt Along and will be providing tips and hints to help you along they way.
