Fall Into A Quilt Along Block One

Welcome everyone to Block 1 for the Fall Into A QAL.

Without further ado, here is block 1. A hedgehog, I just could not resist making one of these little critters. I love them. You see where I live in South Africa it is fall or autumn right now. So I am so happy to be working on a Fall quilt with all of you.

For the hedgehog I decided to design an applique pattern. It is super simple and easy to make.

Full instructions is in the pattern that you will download.

You can download the pattern here. Plus clicking on the picture above will take you to the download page as well.

My block, has not been stitched down yet. As I am planning to quilt as you go for this quilt. The same as I did last year.

Remember to come back and visit next week Tuesday, where I will show you how I quilt this block.

Fall Into a Qal Introduction

Fall Into a Qal Introduction

Welcome to the introduction to our new Quilt Along called Fall Into a Qal starting 15 May 2018. The theme as you have guessed from the designed is Fall. You should be very easily be able to finish this quilt by fall.

There will be 12 blocks from 10 designers, plus 7 hosts. The hosts will be making all the blocks, showing different skills sets.

I have decided to do all my blocks as quilt as you go again, like last year. But instead of posting the information the same day as the block, I will do a follow up post the week after a block release with how I quilted each block.

All the blocks are designed by our Quilt Group called

Fall Into a Qal Introduction

And let us not forget about the prizes. We will have prices for each block that you complete, and a grand prize at the end, for each quilt top that you complete.

“To keep the contest portion of the quilt-along fair and fun for everyone, only quilts that use all of the designers’ blocks will be eligible for prizes. Likewise, our bi-weekly giveaways will only be open to those that make the designer’s block for that fortnight.”

Fall Into a Qal Introduction

You will need about 2 yards of back ground fabric, this does not include yardage for sashing or backing for the quilt.

And each block will be 12 inches squared.

Keep your eyes peeled for the first block to be released on 15 May 2018.

Please also visit all the the other hosts and designers, to see what they have to say about the quilt along coming up.

Quilt Qwazy Queens Day Two

Welcome to Quilt Qwazy Queens Blog Hop Day 2, hosted by Marian at Seams to Be Sew. You’ll find the list of other participants at the end of my post who are also offering daily giveaways. Thank you, Marian, for hosting another brilliant hop.

Our theme this year is UFO’s (Unfinished Objects), you know! Those quilt tops you finished and not quilted yet. Or maybe you haven’t even made all the blocks yet for a complete quilt top.

After much debate with myself about how I am going to show my huge amount of UFO’s, I made the decision to show you ONLY 20 of them, and not all 87!

And to make it easier, I left them all in 1 photo and not 20.

In this photo I have the following UFO’s; Fantastic Beasts 1 & 2, I want to believe, Pink Kitty, Pinstripe Crossing, Star Trek quilt, My Favourite Things, Project of Doom, Signature top, Pinwheel table runner, T Shirt quilt, Ipad Quilt, Place mats, Candlewicking quilt, Fall panel, Camping quilt, Little pink house, Stacked Windows, and Paper Piecing Vintage.

These are the ones, that I had every intention of finishing off this year… what a laugh. This year, is turning out to be just as busy as last year.  But I will persevere.

Please go and visit the other ladies who is posting today, to see what they have been busy with.

Newsflash Exclusive for Subscribers

Hullo everybody,

Newsletters

In planning for next year and looking over my website, I realized that the newsletters were looking a little sloppy.

I have combined all the newsletters into 1 mailing list, called Quilt In Piece Newsletter, this will still bring you all new updates happening on the blog, for announcement on Quilt Alongs, new blog posts, new pages etc. And will go out once a week as normal.

And then I created a brand new newsletter called New Pattern Releases!

This newsletter, will only be sent out when I release a new pattern, and will include a direct link to the pattern and special subscriber only discount code.

As my loyal subscribers, I wanted to reward you for following my progress in the past couple of years, this code will be specific to each pattern released. So don’t miss reading all the newsletters!

To everyone already on my mailing list, I have added you on already, but please feel free to unsubscribe from this list, if you do not want to receive this one. Or message me and I will take you off.

New subscribers!

If you are new, please hop on over to the right hand side of the blog and sign up for 1 or both of the newsletters, to get the latest news and announcements.

The Shop

The other big change coming, is the shop I am setting up right here. It is nearly finished. And am hoping to publish the shop by the end of the year. So look out for that.

The reason why I am opening a shop right here, is to be able to give you a discount. I cannot do this on Craftsy yet.

Testers

This is a biggy.

I am looking for testers for my patterns going up for sale. I did a shout out in my Facebook Group earlier this year, but due to family issues, this has fizzled out.

Major changes are coming with this, with a big bunch of new patterns to be released in 2018.

Look out for a future blog post with an invite for anyone interested in testing for me, with more information.

That is all for now.

Happy Sewing

I Wish You A Merry Quilt Along Quilt As You Go Layout

I Wish You A Merry Quilt Along Quilt As You Go Layout

And finally and far to quickly, we have finished all 12 blocks and will be sewing them altogether to make a quilt.

Some of you may have quilted each block along with me, to make a quilt as you go quilt. I am so happy to see so many of you.

Now I will be showing you how to put these together.

But first, there is the really big prize.

I Wish You A Merry Quilt Along Quilt As You Go Layout

The sponsors web pages are below;

Make Modern Magazine – https://www.makemodern.com.au/

RJR Fabric – https://www.rjrfabrics.com/

Island Batik – www.islandbatik.com/

Quilting Jetgirl – https://quiltingjetgirl.com/

The Warm Co – https://warmcompany.com/

Aurifil – www.aurifil.com/

Warm Crochet – https://warmcrochet.com/

Good luck, you have until 15 January 2018 to submit a photo of your finished quilt top to enter to win the prize.

Putting the quilt together.

You will need the following;

(8) 1 inch x 12.5 inch strips (back)

(8) 2 inch x 12.5 inch strips (front) (pressed in half)

(3) 1 inch x 36.5 inch strips (back)

(3) 2 inch x 36.5 inch strips (front) (pressed in half)

Your choice of binding.

My layout, has 3 blocks in a row, and 4 rows to make up the final quilt.

Step 1

Take (1) 2 x 12 inch strip and line it up on the front of a block.

Add (1) 1 x 12 inch strip to the back of the block.

Make sure they are line up nicely. You will have the top strip, the quilted block and the bottom strip all lined up. Now, sew a seam a 1/4 inch from the edge.

Step 2

Turn over your block. See the strip?

Press the back strip towards the seam. This will make it easier to sew the next block to it.

Step 3

Take the next block in the row, place it with the backside facing up, and the backside of the first block facing down. So they need to be back to back.

Place the back strip (from the first block) along the edge of the second block.

Make sure that they edges line up nicely.

And sew a 1/4 from the edge.

Step 4

Flip the second block over to also face up. Check how perfectly the edge fit snugly together. This will not create a ridge in the finished quilt, as there is no overlapping.

Press the top strip over to the second block. The top strip cover the seam allowance easily.

You can now, either hand sew this strip down, the same as binding, or you can machine sew a straight line down the edge. To make it look more even, you can repeat the line on both sides of the strip. Plus if you use a matching thread with the back, you will not notice the extra line on the back.

Step 5

Repeat, all the steps above, to finish the rest of the rows. And exactly the same way, to attach all the rows.

The finished quilt. Trimmed and squared.

The binding.

I cut my binding strips at 2 1/2 inch wide and pressed in half. Use any technique you prefer to bind your quilt. I like to machine bind my quilts, as most are for my family and they don’t mind.

Candy stripe binding.

My amateurish attempt at placing the quilt artistically below. LOL.

A closeup of the biding and the corners.

And now we have the FINAL block, block 12.

The “Christmas Lights” block was designed by Laura Piland at Slice of Pi Quilts. You can find the tutorial and pattern on her blog here.

Here is my finished Christmas Lights block.

I will confess here, that it was my first time making and using bias tape in quilting. It scared me silly.

But here is the big lesson my fellow quilters, do not prevent yourself from trying something new or different, because it looks to scary or difficult.

This block was a lot easier than I thought it would be, because of the bias tape. I did not for one second believe that the fabric would form a curved shape.

Laura’s instructions in the pattern and on her blog, is super easy to follow and explains everything very well.

So pop on over to her blog and check it out.

Quilting the block

Below is a couple of close up photos of the quilting on this block.

First, I glued down the bias tape with some thermaweb. I managed to selvage some from an elderly lady who was throwing her sewing things away. Below is brands typically found in South Africa, but I a pretty sure that anywhere else had better quality products available. These were for hemming clothes and works perfectly for this project. I used the 23mm (+- 1 inch strip, rolled in 8 yard lengths)

See now I don’t have to pin the tape.

I started by stitching down all the bias tape, as I was a bit worried it would move around to much. Even with it being glued down.

Using a machine applique stitch, in this case a blanket stitch.

And lastly I stitched around each of the globes.

The background called for some meandering to fill up the spaces.

And now for block 11.

The “North Star” block was designed by Kathleen at Kathleen McMusing. You can find the tutorial and pattern on her blog here.

Here is my finished North Star block.

I dug really deep into my stash for this block. I just KNEW that I had to keep that shiny (slippery) pretty (insert swear word here) fabric. See I am not a hoarder, I USED it. LOL. Anyway, I love how the star finished off.

Quilting the block

Below is a couple of close up photos of the quilting on this block.

Sandwich and baste your block. I used my quarter inch or walking foot for this one. And echo stitched all the way around the star, in a triangle shape. I deliberately chose white thread to contrast with the red, to (pretend) show light radiating from the star.

Then I stitched in the ditch around all the shapes in the star. Trying to match the thread color with the star.

Just love how the flange pops out.

All trimmed.

I do have a photo of the quilted block. The quilting is very simple on this one. I had planned on quilting it, so that it looks like the Reindeer had hair, and snowflakes in the background. But when I sat down to do it that way. It wasn’t working for me. In the end I decided on a simple stitch in the ditch, slight next to the ditch.

Enter If You Dare Blog Hop Day Two

Yesterday started the Enter If you Dare Blog Hop, a Halloween theme.

I had so much fun, making the mug rugs, and wall hanging for this event.

But first!  A big thank you to Marian at Seams to be Sew for planning and running another awesome event. Be sure to visit Marian blog every day to get the pretty awesome patterns she is giving away.

The Bonus Blocks

Ok! yes I am starting this post a little back to front.

Marian asked all the bloggers if they were interested in making some of her bonus patterns to show off during the hop. (The free patterns mentioned above). And I jumped at the chance.

Here is my two that I chose for my day.

This one looks just like a ghost emoji. I think it is so cute. Click on the photo to go to the page where all these patterns are shown.

I chose a black background, as you would see your ghost during the night, and bordered it with a green to match his eye. A super easy applique pattern, I chose to machine applique the pieces to the background at the same time quilting it through the quilt sandwich. I then back stitched the features in the face. You can just make them out in the photos, I do wish I had chosen a darker green.

This one above is a traditionally pieced pattern of Frankenstein. Mostly squares.

I chose to quilt this wall hanging (20 x 20″) in a criss cross pattern, and think it turned out very well.

Click on the photo to go to the pattern page.

My contribution

Alright, I need to confess something here.

Every single hop and quilt along I have taken part in, I have designed something new.

But circumstances in the last couple of months had been against me for this one.

The patterns I am showing today, is both free and new to me. Freshly made, quilted and bound, hot of the presses.

But not designed by me. Both these blocks below can be found free on Fandom in Stitches and is designed by my friend Jennifer Ofenstein, these patterns can also be found on her own website called Sewhooked.
