A Feast of Abiding Presence: Reflecting on Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, is a beautiful feast that celebrates the enduring gift of Holy Communion. As we gather to partake in this sacred meal, Scripture offers profound insights into its significance.

In Exodus 24:3-8, Moses recounts the covenant God established with the Israelites. They agree to follow God’s laws, and the covenant is sealed with a sacrificial meal – a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice to come. Centuries later, Psalm 116:11-17 echoes this theme. The Psalmist declares, “I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord,” recognizing the cup as a symbol of God’s enduring presence.

The book of Hebrews (9:11-15) sheds further light. The author explains that the Old Testament sacrifices were merely a temporary solution. Then comes Jesus, the great High Priest, who offers Himself – the perfect sacrifice – once and for all. His blood becomes the “new covenant” in His blood, a far superior promise to the one established with Moses.

Mark’s Gospel (14:12-16, 22-26) vividly portrays the Last Supper, where Jesus institutes the Eucharist. He takes bread and wine, declaring them His body and blood, a gift to be shared “in remembrance of me.” In this act, Jesus fulfills the prophecies and foreshadowing, becoming the ultimate sacrifice, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Corpus Christi reminds us that Holy Communion is not mere symbolism. Through this sacred meal, we encounter the real presence of Christ. We are nourished by His body and blood, strengthening our connection to Him and one another.

As we celebrate Corpus Christi, reflect on the profound gift of Holy Communion. Approach the Eucharist with reverence and gratitude, allowing Christ’s presence to fill you with love and grace. Let this encounter inspire you to share His love with the world, living out the covenant established through His sacrifice.
