The Call and the Crucible: Discerning Formation

Post 1 of 5.

Hello everyone! My name is Vanda, and I’m thrilled to be starting this blog series about my journey in seminary formation for ministry. Many of you might be curious about what leads someone to pursue this path, and the truth is, it’s a unique experience for everyone. Today, I want to talk about the initial call and the anxieties that come with entering the crucible of formation.

The Call: From Seeds of Service to a Burning Bush

The call to serve wasn’t a sudden revelation. It was more like a seed planted early on, around the time I was five years old, nurtured by small acts of kindness. Perhaps it was helping an elderly neighbor with groceries, organizing a clothing drive for the homeless shelter, or simply offering a listening ear to a friend in need. Each of these experiences, seemingly ordinary, ignited a spark within me.

However, the turning point came when I encountered a specific passage in the Bible. Isaiah 6:8 struck a chord deep within my soul: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!‘” Just like the prophet Isaiah, I felt a growing urge to answer this call, a desire to dedicate myself fully to serving others in a more profound way.

The Crucible: Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

The decision to enter seminary was exciting, but it wasn’t without its challenges. Leaving behind the familiar routine for a life of intense studies, spiritual exploration, and a new community was a daunting prospect. The academic workload, and the thought of being away from loved ones brought a pang of loneliness. Doubts crept in – was I truly cut out for this rigorous path? Did I have the necessary strength and unwavering faith to persevere?

Facing the Flames: Embracing the Discomfort

I realize these anxieties is a necessary part of the discernment process. Stepping into the unknown requires a leap of faith, a trust that God will equip us for the journey ahead. Entering formation isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about surrendering to the transformative power of growth and discovery. The anxieties became a crucible, a fire that refines my faith and strengthens my resolve.

Reflection: Trusting the Whisper, Embracing the Process

Through prayer, reflection, and conversations with wise mentors, I learned to trust the initial whisper I felt years ago. The anxieties, though real, didn’t diminish the call to serve. Formation is a time for introspection, for aligning oneself with God’s will. It’s a chance to develop the skills and spiritual maturity needed to become an effective leader and shepherd within the community.

Call to Action: Have You Heard a Faint Echo?

Perhaps you too have heard a faint echo in your heart, a nudge towards service, a yearning for something more fulfilling. Don’t dismiss it. Take time for quiet reflection, for introspection through prayer, and for seeking guidance from trusted friends or spiritual advisors. Explore volunteer opportunities in your community, immerse yourself in scripture, and listen to the whispers of your own soul. Remember, God often speaks in the quietest moments.

This blog series is just the beginning of my journey, and I’m eager to share my experiences – the joys, the challenges, and the incredible transformations that come with formation. Stay tuned for upcoming posts where I’ll delve deeper into the day-to-day life of a seminarian, the importance of spiritual growth, and the immense support found within the faith community.
